Oct. 7, 2023. A HAMAS terrorist attack in Israel left over 1,200 concert goers dead; others were injured, or taken hostage. In the aftermath, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu launched a retaliation on HAMAS, a U.S. designated Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO). The response took place in Gaza, where the Palestinian people were caught in crossfire aimed at HAMAS. Pro-Palestinian students set up an encampment at Columbia University on April 17, 2024 calling attention to the rights of Palestinians and demanding divestment from Israel. College demonstrations spread to other U.S. campuses, Jewish students experienced anti-Semitism, some police donned riot gear. Protestors wore masks or smashed cameras, other forms of vandalism occurred, and there was talk of professional agitators infiltrating student bodies. UCLA had protestors, counter-protestors, and several hospitalizations were reported. A few schools, among them Brown University, were able to dial down tension and safely dismantle encampments. Tactics, such as forming panels to facilitate dialog, and the use of written de-escalation agreements, allowed both students’ and authorities’ voices to be heard.

Feb. 17, 2023 – In Memory of Adriana Olivia Kuch, a New Jersey teen lost to bullycide earlier this month. When left unchecked, it’s documented that a portion of bullies don’t grow up to be your friendly neighbor, but violent offenders. As a human race, when someone is different than us, at least on the surface, our instincts tell us to push them out of the pack. Bullies, and bully targets are sometimes the so called “outliers”. As unique individuals they may be what saves us from life’s monotony as they go on to become some of our greatest thinkers, leaders and artists. Mary McLeod Bethune, who went from working in rice fields to founding a HBCU in Daytona, FL said it best, “Invest in the human soul. Who knows, it might be a diamond in the rough”. On a practical note, writing and signing a personal safety plan, with distinct steps that faculty, staff, classmates, parents, and the bully target agree to take, can put a solid layer of protection between the bully and their target.
Feb. 14, 2023 - At CRS we’re devastated by the lethal incident that occurred at Michigan State University (MSU) on Monday, February 13th, 2023. A New York Times article covering the event, points out that for some MSU students, this was not their first, front row seat to a mass shooting. According to CNN, the MSU buildings, that were the site of the shootings -- which left three dead and five critically wounded [one now stable] -- are accessible to the general public during business hours. Physical Access Control Systems (PACS) and Visitor Management Systems (VMS) are common tools used to secure campuses. Physical and cybersecurity go hand in hand, and both must be multi-layered to secure a modern, borderless and connected campus. For example, PACS considers campus grounds, parking lots, building envelops, and interior spaces. Integrating the protective measures called for in the current environment, will not as some suggest, make for a prison like environment, as much as give campus users peace of mind. Perpetrators, for the most part, look for “soft targets”, whether it’s vulnerable people or accessible settings. The capacity to protect a campus community must keep pace with the institution’s population growth rate and footprint – otherwise, we’re only as strong as our weakest link.

Jun. 21, 2022 – According to NPR, by the time May 25th, 2022 rolled around, the U.S. had 27 school shootings. The Gun Violence Archive stated by June 8th, there were over 250 mass shootings in the U.S. According to The Washington Post, following the May 24th Uvalde Elementary School massacre in Texas - - which left 19 students and 2 teachers dead -- to June 8th, the country had notched an additional 38 mass shootings. The Post reported an upward trend in mass shootings, with nearly 417 recorded in 2019; 611 in 2020; and 700 in 2021. The fastidious accounting of a campus’s protective assets and risk landscape, and the matching of solutions to the threat profile, is the way forward to close security gaps.
